We are currently developing a range of separate websites dedicated to serve each target market of the business. Does anybody know whether Google penalises sites that use the same design template/structure yet even if the content on all the sites is absolutely unique and there is no cross linking to each other?

I don't think so. There are 1000+ websites out there using Oscommerce or other shopping carts and they do very well in SE.

google replies on content moreso than design. bare in mind, google also indexes IP address to see if websites are the same(ie. if they are the same owner, they will be on the same server).

make sure meta content, at least, is unique for each site.

thanks for repsonses.

The websites will all be on same server but different ip addresses. the only content that will remain the same in privacy, terms, about us and contact us pages. What do you reckon best way to approach these? link to one master copy???

Wordpress has loads of installs and many use the same template but different content. They rank fine if they are worked on like any other site.
