I'm a non-technical person. We're a leading travel website located in Dublin (.com) with our servers also located in Dublin. 1 million+ unique visits per year.

We operate in the Irish and UK market. UK being the more important area for us with the biggest potential for growth.

We are ranked pretty much #1 for most search terms in Ireland relating to our particular niche. So, well and truly and Irish website in Google's eyes. 70% of our traffic is Uk based and we generally make it onto page 2 or the bottom of page 1 for the key searches in that market.

I'm looking to speak to someone / a company who specialises in this area who can help us achieve our Irish success in the UK whilst not damaging the Irish ranking. We've done certain things like using proxy servers in the UK and also set the Google Geo Targetting tool to UK which have worked to some extent but it's time to call in the experts and get this right once and for all.

Any suggestions?

Thanks..

Personally if it was me I would keep them in Dublin. I have sites hosted all over the globe but yet I can manage to rank very high in other countries such as Ireland & UK.

It would seem to me that your UK results could be more competitive making it difficult to reach the top compared to Ireland's results. Moving the server across to the UK would probably have very little, if any, impact on your position in the search results.

What I would do is concentrate in getting more quality links from sites based in the UK.

This is just my personal opinion from what I've seen on my own sites. Hopefully others can chime in with some feedback.

Bearing in mind that I am totally biased :)

First off ..

If you're using dedicated servers then you might be able to get IPs that are setup as UK ones from your provider (I know we've done it for clients)
Secondly, if your hosting in Ireland is good then do you want to risk it all moving elsewhere?

Currently our dedicated servers are located in a hosting facility 100 metres from our own office. The idea of moving them to the UK is one we'll take seriously if we thought there was a case for it but certainly not our favoured approach. I'd assume that any major changes like that are going to take quite some time to bed in and could take upto 6 months to start seeing any benefits? Would that be safe to assume?

We would be willing to accept a drop in traffic in Ireland if it put us on the road to something good in the UK..

The UK inbound links are something we're actively working on but sort of hoped there was something BIG we could be doing.

I think moving the servers to the UK should be a last resort.

There are plenty of other ways to improve your UK ranking. As Gavin said you should "concentrate in getting more quality links from sites based in the UK".

If you're a big company is there not a web developer in the company or a design agency who created your site who can advise you?

Which changes?
