Using H1,H2 and H3 effectively

How do you make the best use of the Header tags for SEO purposes. I noticed that the w3c.org puts their logo in the H1 tags.
I would've thought putting the main keyword as a heading in the H1 tags was most effective.

Any thoughts?

Yes it is but if you need to use an image put your heading text in the alt attribute.

You could use CSS image replacement and indent the text.
