Do you concentrate on Google , Yahoo and the international search engines, or do you devote time to the more specialised niche directories and regional sites?

I tend to focus on as many as i possibly can - it all helps!

Yes, I would agree. You will never get penalised by G for incomming links, only outgoing (I found out to my cost). Two outgoing links I had on one of my sites resulted in a 400 place drop.

Nice to see a familiar face :)

What on earth did you link to that caused such a large drop?

You live and learn :)

I remember years ago using some software to automatically submit to loads of link farms simultaneously. It never helped with getting traffic and probably did more harm than good

link farms

how do you define link farms? I want to be sure to avoid that faux pas that you made damien! so - did you rectify things in the end and get your ranking sorted?

Hi Sinead

Yes, my primary site www.ketec.net is back up the rankings under the term - Web Design Ireland – and I’m happy enough with that, thank you for asking.

Avoid automated scripts which place links on your own site, as mentioned above, using linkmetro or a site like that for swapping links could result in your being linked to undesirable neighbourhoods.

Another example is linkdash.com, you can get over 4000 incoming links in 10 minutes, however, I read somewhere that their code is actually banned from google.

If I were to define a link farm "any script or code on your site which automatically publishes links" would be close enough.

The key to it is links, there is no problem having outgoing links as long as they are to sites of a similar theme / industry and are not banned by google. Get as many incoming links as possible, you can get these from free directories. I have posted a few below (most of them free) to start with.

link farms and free link sites

Hi Damien,

Thanks for that response yesterday. Our site is www.crossculturetraining.com We're selling an eLearning tutorial geared towards businesspeople looking to do business in Japan, it essentially verses them in the etiquette of the country to maximise the effectiveness of their visit! That's it in a nutshell ;-)

Your advice is appreciated as it's often hard to know what jeopardises and what enhances SEO techniques.....I'm very new to the game and learning as I go. How is it possible to distinguish between the link farms and those sites you have listed previously? Is it simply the 'automatically included' aspect that determine the difference?

regards,
sinead

Your page titles are all the same which is a big no no

Yes, I couldn’t agree more, your page title is the most important tag of all, make sure it reflects what’s on the actual page.

We have all looked for years for the holy grail of one click and my page is perfectly optimised. The bottom line is, that it’s a bit of work to go over each page and optimise it and to be honest I don’t know any other way that works.

Check each page of your site using this tool
http://www.webmaster-toolkit.com/web-page-analyser.shtml

Remember you have to do it for each page, not just the home page.

Cheers

Sinead,

You should concentrate on quality inbound links rom on topic sites, this way you'll always avoid link farms.

My favourite hobby is checking out who links to my competitors
links:www.youcompetitors.com. Check these out then see if they will link to you as well. You should find loads of relevent directories and then sit and hit "submit URL" as often as you can. Sometimes you will be asked for a recipricol link but don't id you don't have to. It takes longer to get the link but you don't want your site littered with a load of links.

Submitting articles is another great way to get links, just Google it for your business type.

I have submitted our site to every search engine going you can find American websites that will do it automatically for free (Google again). I even now have links from some of these engines listed in Google.

Hope this helps, C.
