| We all know that "free" is used 99 % as a lie. It does increase the CTR, ok , it's not good for ROI , but still , it takes a place in the adsense against real and honest advertizers, and does increase the price of bids because of it ... My opinion, is for google to be a bit harder about the use of this word. Any opinion ? |

| Well, I think it would be something that would be very hard to 'regulate'. Like you say, they could put a blanket ban on th word, but i really don't think that's an option for the reason you state... some businesses/websites are based on providing free content and would be adversely affected. On a side note, there's an interesting article on the latest SitePoint newsletter which claims Google is manipulating searchers away from certain websites/products which are in competition which their own products/services. | Using the term “real and honest advertisers” in the context above would imply that businesses that use the word “free” are not honest or real. If you walk down the isle of any supermarket you will see offers like “buy one and get one free” why shouldn’t any online site or business be any different. The concept of “free” in marketing terms is very powerful. Also Google use the same tactic, and have free offers with their own products, Google earth for instance. If an advertiser is not getting an increased ROI for an increased CTR, then there is something wrong with his adword campaign, not the programme itself. |

| my understanding is that this is policed by google, if an ad has the word "free" in it, it must be backed up by the link associated with the ad. If it can't then the ad wont be approved. Which seems fair enough to me. Some people will use free offers to entice cutomers which should be allowed IMO. |

| @ButterMilk: That was quite a shady thing and corrupted people's perception of Google's neutrality but thankfully they have reduced the tips to specific things such as Image search which is helpful. |
