It's either a sobering reminder of the importance of PHP security and keeping up to date - OR - i just thought about this: This may be the largest and most elaborate link bait ever created or orchestrated.

(Here's the queue for the Tinfoil hats - )
A lot of those blogs and bloggers are very "close" - often writing about each other's posts - and nearly all mention those websites (syndk8.com, webmasterworld etc) in their blogs too.

The more people talk about the "Hacking" Threats, the more likely they are to link to those websites.

Lets see how this plays out: and how much each of those sites gains because of these threats, and how much data / reputation has been Lost to those sites because of the "hacking"..

As for sounding offensive to the webmasters who have been hacked (or threatened), i really think the damage done was minimal - they of all people know about backups and their readers are savvy enough to spot a defacement.

I'm not into whis whole "conspiracy" thing - but there's something about this that makes it somehow more beneficial to the sites listed (in terms of SEO, backlinks, new readers, curious people checking those blogs etc..).

You see? It worked! I'm not of the conspiracy side (much.. ¬_¬ ) - but i am saying that these webmasters should be smart enough to turn all that traffic into readers and linkbait :P And that orchestrating a similar "thing" could yeild similar results in future (if done right)

Risks of pulling this type of stunt are also quite high - you could ruin your reputation by pulling a quickie like this.

How many clients do you think you would get for SEO work by faking your hacking?

I have (yet another) draft post about SEOs being link whores and why everyone is sceptical about 'stunts'.

Yes - risks are enormous, but so are the numbers of backlinks and curious readers.

Was it not Jason who got the link love? I'm a little confused.

And Richard, lets exchange draught posts and we can finish off each others backlogs!
