Is there much demand for it from developers in general, or is still in the realm of the geek?

It still has little name recognition, but I would see no problem with anyone developing a site right now using it. (And I would see it as a better option as PHP or similar from a maintenance point of view.)

Actually, someone should probably be selling Ruby on Rails hosting in Ireland. *hint, hint*

Yeah the video is cool
I wrote about it a while back.

The video is 50mb and in QT format http://www.rubyonrails.com/media/vid...with_sound.mov

Now all Ruby on Rails needs is some more industry recognition.
