As louie said ... W3Schools is the place to start I think.

Web design in my mind is about having an interest and a passion in learning and finding out new things.

My advice would be to set yourself a goal and go from there. To be honest web design includes graphics / html / css / databases / programming / SEO (search engine optimization) / javascript / AJAX / Flash / Server Admin ... and more ... . Personally I'd like to think I'm pretty good with most of those things.

My advice as I said would be to set yourself a goal also decide what do you want to know break it into chunks and go from there.

Lets say you want to make a basic webpage ... for this you'll need HTML

find out about HTML HTML Tutorial ... once you've got a bit of knowledge about all this and can put together a webpage (I'd advice steering clear of WYSIWYG ... what you see if what you get style editors ... you've no doubt heard of dreamweaver that is one)

Once you've got your webpage together .. you might want to take a look at CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) ... this will allow you to do a lot more with you pages in terms of appearance.

Depending on who you are approaching for your lessons you'll find some charging more than others ... €20 - €30 sounds to me like a rate for grinds on an 1 on 1 basis. Given than anyone who knows all of the above is charging a lot more to design websites ... you may find yourself getting someone who is not that experienced ... again you might find someone who is a great teacher.

There are alternatives and those would be online courses ... you might find Lynda.com to be a great place ... it offers video tutorials about everything. A lot of webdesign is doing things ... you can have your teacher teach you a lot in an hour but unless you go and put it all into practice you are probably kidding yourself.

Anyways ... goodluck with the "career" choice
James

I just have to say the above quote is actually part of web development not web design as it does require a more advance knowledge.

Louie you are right and I used the term web design in a much broader sense

I was going on Phillippeaqua's request to learn how to build and run his own websites. As such there is a lot more to it than just the design.

Hi everyone,

Responding to your advices.

My knowledge of computer is slightly above most "mortals" average.

I did a basic building webpages course more than 3 years ago (introduction to dreamweaver and flash ), so i am a bit rusty now.

Good Idea about the goals, it is a good way to build up knowledge and check if I am progressing.

Thank you also for the references websites and the feedback on the prices.

Yes indeed you interpreted right I meant Web design and web development, as my ultimate goal is building websites for myself and running them. (hopefully that is all I ll need as an income ).

You have given me really good advice to build up a good base and I am very thankfull -

If you have any extra advice or ideas they are welcome.

If you are also interested in given some private classes ( like 1-2 hours once a month to give advice and feedback of what i ve done so far and how to improve; it would be a mentoring experience ) let me know and we also can negotiate a price that you find appropriate.

If you have any extra advice or ideas they are always welcome.

Thank you all and good luck for your projects

Philippe

If you need any help all you have to do is ask.

Meantime, get a domain, a hosting account and build a website (you have to start somewhere).

I am in the middle of a project SEO Website Analyzer Project that might be helpful to you so good luck with it.

as d-tour said ... get stuck in ...

what operating system / language are you planning on using ? or do you know yet ?

get your idea together for your "company" name / website name you are after and go ahead and register it ...

get yourself a basic enough hosting plan for 30 / 40 quid ... its great to develop locally ... its even better to have a place to show people what you're talking about when you run into bugs / problems...
