What message boards have people installed on their websites and what are the highs and lows you encountered?

I have installed two - PHPBB and VBulletin.

The highs of PHPBB are it's easy setup and admin panel, the lows are a lack of features and security problems. In saying that...it is free.

VBulletin. Fantastic board. Full of great standard features and can be easily modified. Drawback is the complicated admin panel.

Has anyone used either Vanilla or PunBB on a commerical site? I'm thinking of installing Vanilla on a new site i'm working on. Any other recommendations for boards....

I've used a variety of bulletin board software in the past, but I refuse to use anything other than vbulletin these days. Sorry, but I value my time

haven't used Vanilla so much but from what little i have it is a great forum application, particularly for smaller-sized forums, however the look-and-feel of it may be a turn off to many users imo.

PunBB on the otherhand i have loved since day one, i don't think i'd ever consider something like vBulletin after having used PunBB - it is very customisable if you have some basic PHP skills and is extremely fast and lightweight. plus the code is very easy to understand and thus create mods for it. it is also free

I've used a few but always found Simple Machines to be the best.

I have used Vanilla and have lots of experience with it. It's much better for use on a non-technical audience.

The software is really maturing and there are plugins not to fill most voids.

The community is really great.

I have not developed any themes for it. Just a modified version of the base theme. But I am very happy with it.
