"Joe Job" spam attacks

A few days ago I started getting a lot of weird emails. They were bounce back emails and out of office replies, to emails which I have not sent!

I got on to my host and they said it looks like a "Joe Job" attack.

I'm pretty confused about this, why it might happen and what i can do about it. For the moment I've disabled my catch all, but should I still be worried?

I get 1000's of these a month on some of my older domains not much you can do really as far as I know.

Turning of your catch all like you said is a help. Also make sure they are not sending them via your SMPT server, its not likely but if they are turn on, require a valid login to send email via you SMPT.

Joe job emails are dead easy to do though. Save this code as a .php file and run it on your web server and you'll see what I mean. You might get an interesting offer from Bill.

edit: And check you spam box too if you use gmail as this ^^^ will end up there!

Unfortunately there's not a lot you can do to avoid the bouncebacks apart from disabling any catchalls...
