Enniskerry.ie seems to be a natural target for plagiarism.

There was a local "Bray and Enniskerry Directory" [one of those glossy handouts with a map and business advertising, that's handed out in the area] doing the rounds last year. They were not only using my photo of the village on their front cover, but had ripped off the text content wholesale inside. I heard they were due to republish this year and managed to lay my hands on a sample copy. I rang them as a prospective advertiser [] and complimented them on their photography. Once I had them hooked, I told 'em who I was and laid into them. I said that I would not proceed with an injunction if all Enniskery.ie material was correctly credited, and that they must put a prominent ad for the site on their brochure. I thought that was fair enough. Strangely, the brochure has not been published this year!!!!

As for VisitWicklow.ie, I discovered some months ago that they were using my photo of the village [that photo is very popular for some reason] and e-mailed them. Again, I said I would not complain if I got a link. I never heard back from them but suddenly ALL the photos disappeared from the page! Now I discover they are using my text as well.

On Monday, I'll investigate who is responsible for the content of the site. It is obviously closely tied with Wicklow County Council and East Coast Tourism, and I doubt if either of those would like to be accused of plagiarism.

I have no objection to people using my photos or text. In fact it is rather flattering. But I want some kind of credit or acknowledgement, preferably in the form of a link back to Enniskerry.ie.

Anyway. Watch this space.......

Have you cached their site? A handy tool is spiderzilla plugin for FF which will fully spider their site and store in locally on your HD.

Can be very handy

Nice one. Thanks for that. I have used HTTrack, but find it a bit clunky. Spiderzilla is much neater.

Site downloaded.

You are a scholar and a gentleman. But then, your mum is from Enniskerry!

Because they are lazy scumbags?

We haven't been plagiarised in a while, but we did find a competitor a couple of years back who had grabbed large tracts of our site and done a simple "find and replace" on it. I called them and gave them 48 hours to rectify the situation. What really got on my nerves was that they tried to blame their web designer.

A lot depends on the material that is being plagiarised.

Enniskerry.ie is supposed to be a guide to the Enniskerry area, and I have written notes on the various local spots. If they take that material then it means I have got it right, and I am the definitive guide. Similarly, my photo of the village seems to have hit the spot.

But I do want some kind of credit. And a link seems reasonable.

However, in most other cases, I wouldn't be so tolerant.

Thats a reason why I dont give them a time frame to remove the content, I go straight to the host and have them pull the account for copyright infringement.

Although I have only had to deal with this once with a site in the States.
