Its called competition! Expect to see more browsers in the future as people exploit the fact that Firefox, Chrome, Opera etc are open source.

Our company, I'm pretty sure will be IE always, as we, unfortunately, are embedded with Microsoft on the desktop.

IE6 is what we use and it won't be changing anytime soon. The cost of updating and supporting over 100,000 desktops is significant and there is not enough significant added value to use IE7 or Firefox or whatever else...

Competition is good.

And if you think there's a browser war now, then you obviously missed out on the first one

Sometimes it's not, I subscribe to Sky Sports and a couple of years ago they controled most of the large sporting events and I paid my subscription and was happy. But then the EU decided that it was wrong for Sky to control most of these sports events and Sentanta was introduced to the market.

Now I still pay the same sub (maybe more to Sky) but I am now only getting 1/2 the sports events as before and If I want them all again I'll have to take out an extra sub to Setanta sports.

So not all competition is good but it does make everyone improve their products, but it will be interesting to see wheather it will be the best funded or the best browser that we will be using in 5 years time

thats hardly competitions fault though is it? that's down to regulation.
You can argue that now, because of setanta, I can subscribe for the heineken cup, and then unsubscribe when it's over, rather than pay for a 12 mth contract with sky

Heineken cup is on Sky Sports this year You can unsubscribe to sky sub after 30 days, (12 months only for a new installation)

I'm hoping that any new browser war will be at the expense of browser vendors with all the browsers adhering to standards and further improvements being made across the board (consistent form control rendering, etc). Basically, all browsers should render sites the very same with the only differentiator being the browser's design and functionality/feature set.

I don't care how many browsers there are out there... as long as I don't have to cater for the ones that make a complete ****** of my mark-up. Other than that, they can have their war!

I agree with most of the replies, the more browsers the better as this will only force vendors to continually improve their product. However, I do understand exactly where you are coming from...

I too am about to go live on a site that works fine in every browser, Mac and PC, except IE 6. I know I will probably get slated for this but I am seriously considering not adapting my code at all. I'm sick of having to go back and spend hours fixing something that isn't broken in the first place.

The more developers bend over and accommodate IE6, the longer it will hang around.

Won't matter what developers do or don't do, IE6 will only go away when the IT depts of large corporate organisations feel that they can take the pain and cost of a move to IE7 or Firefox.

I agree, to a certain extent. But there are many free alternative to IE6. If developers stop accommodating IE 6 then these large IT depts will be forced into a change eventually.
