Default Directory Software

I am migrating an existing directory that was maintained in static html. There are a couple of hundred listings in it. The plan is to expand it.

I know there is tons of software out there for managing directories, been googling. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Or is it better to roll your own, as that is an option, with time constraints being the only problem.

eDirectory - Online Directory Software looks REALLY good but is way too expensive.

I had a look at that, and does look good. But it is $1999 outside of my budget for this one.

What kind of functionality do you want / need?

There are plenty of solutions out there that work really well, but some simply do not scale beyond a couple of hundred links

Perl based scripts such as Glinks scale really well, but cost a few hundred dollars.

I am not looking for anything too complicated.

I need something that will handle 20 or so categories and subcategories, with room to grow. There are a couple of hundred links, but I need room to expand it up to a couple of thousand. Maybe add in a piece about the site. And a way for visitors to add their sites.

After that I don't need much more.

Dave maybe it's too late and you already sorted out directory software.
He's a product that I've created
Codefixer LinksPro - Directory and Link management software
It supports GoogleAds, unlimited categories, search engine friendly pages, thumbnails, newsletters and a whole host of other ones.
There's also an update on the way that will enable recurring subscriptions through PayPal or NoChex and some other features.
