| Goodness, no one doing any reading lately? I'm reading A Passion for Books (ed. Dale Salwak) and Ruth Padel's The Poem and the Journey whenever I'm in the front room, Search Engine Visibility (Shari Thurow) at my desk (when I break for a cuppa), and Bill Bryson's The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid in bed - it's really funny, but then he always is.

| Dark Watch ... I picked up one 2 years ago in Tesco I think ... I wanted something light ... and they are light reading ... can pick them up ... read 5 - 10 pages ... and put them down again ... still like to know whats going to happen Don't read that much the last while ... when I was growing up I used go through ALL the readers digest condensed books ... god they were great. (OK I usually skipped the romantic / heart warming ones in them) Have a few sci-fi series bought that I've got to get through . I just know I'll sit down and it'll be a case of hours later I'll go oh **** look at the time. |

| I finished the Bill Bryson book last night (The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid) and found it very enjoyable indeed. Perhaps it's because he was a child in the 50s as I was that I found it so interesting, but his descriptions of the changes in life in Iowa in the 60s and 70s mirror those that occurred here in Ireland a couple of decades later. There are also some interesting and rather horrifying revelations, one of which concerns how the Americans arranged a coup to eject Guatemala's socialist president at the behest of a big American fruit company there, who was unhappy with the changes the president was making in the lives of the ordinary people and with the amount of monetary compensation offered the company for a takeover of its unused land for the people, which was the value the company had itself put on the land for Guatemalan tax purposes. |
