If you're lazy and want to outsource it then there are companies that will do it for you *properly* , as in manually handling submissions to web directories etc.,
I'm very wary of a lot of the automated solutions as a lot of them used to make all sorts of crazy claims based on their ability to do mass submissions to link sites that didn't vet any of their content. While that might have had some merit years ago I doubt if it's of any value these days

but I agree, submission services are HORRIBLE. The sites that usually backlink are horrible, the 100 links in 1 day idea is horrible, and just the pure fact that someone thinks SEO is as easy as a 1 click solve all is horrible. Elbow grease my SEO friends, elbow grease!! all natural is the way to go!!!!!!!!!
