tourist trail - map overlay system

i need to do a site involving tourist trails - i think something like maps with a series of pins on them
i could probably just use a google map with pins in it but am i right in saying that to get really good stuff happening in G.M. you have to program them with the api (which i have no experience in or time to learn for just one project ) ..... anyway ideally it needs to be editable by the cusomer .... so just wondering if anyone has ever heard of a system that would do this automatically without having to mess with the google maps api too much - some kind of system which puts customer editable overlays over google maps automatically - site is probably to be based on joomla so an extension to that would be ideal

it might be what you need it allows visitors to add content to the team maps.
